Enemy XXX 1 found the field above the Étretat cliffs on a cycling holiday, three years before they got married on it. The forecast said calm. By two o'clock the wind was coming straight off the Channel, and Hanna decided to let the veil do whatever it wanted.
Shooting into the wind
I worked on the Pentax 67 all afternoon with Tri-X, rated at 400 and developed a little longer to hold the white of the dress against a flat grey sky. Most of the frames here were made in the twenty minutes after the ceremony, walking the path back towards the town.
In the darkroom
The print of the kiss took four sheets to get right. The sky needed six extra seconds of burning at the top edge, and the veil needed holding back with a card so it did not block up. It is the print that now hangs in their hallway.
