The whip pan, explained

The cuts in our reel blur sideways like a camera being yanked. Here's the whole trick.

Written by the studio

A cut that moves

A hard cut between two 3D shots can feel like a slideshow. In the last fifth of a second before each cut, our camera swings sideways faster and faster, then lands on the next shot from the other direction.

The blur isn’t rendered in 3D. It’s a horizontal-only blur on the finished frame, turned up and down with the swing. It costs almost nothing and reads exactly like a real whip pan.

Drag it yourself

Drag the pink band on the home page to scrub the reel. Let go and it glides to the nearest shot, whip and all.
